The MSR+ provides a total of 51 keys to give access to all the most frequently used commands of your Meridian products, and a function (or shift) key for additional, less frequently- needed operations. For easy selection of sources the MSR+ provides 12 source keys corresponding to the sources provided by Meridian digital surround controllers and preamplifiers. The MSR+ is supplied with a selection of alternative keycaps for the source keys, which you can use to match the particular combination of components in your system. Extra keycaps are provided for a range of additional devices. For example, if you own a DVD Recorder, you can change the keycaps to provide a DVD-R key. Undoing four screws allows the removal of the top cover of the MSR+, revealing the removable source key caps and enabling them to be interchanged. The MSR+ includes an extensive internal library of devices, from an enormous list of manufacturers, that can be used to replace the original remotes for those other products. Up to nine third-party devices can be controlled, simply by configuring the remote with the appropriate device codes. A complete list of supported product types and manufacturers is provided. In addition to locating the exact code in the list supplied, you can select the type of device and then step through the available device codes until the best one to control your device is located. Even if you own a product that is not supported by the built-in device library, learning capability is included so that the Meridian System Remote Plus can learn up to 120 commands from your existing third-party remote controls and assign them to a key on the MSR+. Learned commands can also be added to the command set provided by the product database, so for example you can add transport controls to your satellite receiver if it subsequently gathers additional PVR functions. |

The learning function is even able to store dual-code commands. For convenience, the MSR+ keypad is backlit, so it can be used even in low-light conditions. The remote automatically senses the ambient light level in the room and only brings up the backlight when it is required, thereby maximising battery life. The MSR+ has a battery life of over six months in normal use – a little less if the backlight is used extensively. The remote runs on four AA size batteries. When the battery power runs low, a low battery indication is displayed. Custom codes are stored for two minutes to allow battery changes to be made without losing the stored custom information. The panel of the MSR+ is divided into a number of different sections for intuitive access to a large number of control functions. Menu keys, for navigating DVD menus or editing DSP parameters, are arranged in a central cluster. Under them is a strip of buttons with multiple functions, selecting Band, Angle and OSD on a DVD player, Record on recording machines, and colour keys to access interactive and other functions on a TV. On the left are number keys, plus the Function key, which accesses secondary functions printed in blue on other keys when held down as a ‘shift’ key. There is also a button to return to the top menu of a DVD. A transport key cluster is provided to the right of the panel, and to its right are volume up/down and mute keys. Store and Clear buttons are beneath the transport cluster, along with a button to change the front-panel display to the selected component. Along the top of the device are 12 source select keys with interchangeable keycaps, and the Off button that places Meridian equipment in stand-by mode. If a source key is pressed on its own, the source input to the Meridian controller is selected and the MSR+ is configured to control the selected device. |

If the Function key is held down while selecting a source button, the remote controls the device without switching to the corresponding input. Pressing the Function key on its own will bring up the backlight if the ambient lighting is low enough. An indicator light at the centre front of the remote flashes when a command is sent. This is also used when programming the remote to control third-party devices. Some keys on the MSR+ are dedicated to controlling your Meridian system and “punch through” whatever device is selected. A reset function is provided to return the MSR+ to its factory settings, wiping all third-party commands, while third-party control codes can also be reset on an individual device basis. The MSR+ is made of a special high-impact plastic that is transparent to infra-red signals. |

As a result there is no need for a special transparent window on the front of the remote, thus adding to the unit’s resilience. The rugged membrane keyboard uses keycaps to provide a positive confirmation of operation and an excellent feel. The Meridian System Remote Plus is provided with all remote-controllable Meridian system components. It can also be purchased separately. |
